Design Sprint
This framework approach is a great way to address a specific challenge or develop a new product or feature. Featuring a cross-functional team, the approach takes anywhere between 1 to 3 weeks.
Why would I need this?
A design sprint is a collaborative framework for problem-solving and idea testing, popularised by Google Ventures. It involves a cross-functional team working together to address a specific challenge or develop a new product or feature.
How does it work?
Understand
The team begins by gaining a deep understanding of the problem at hand, exploring user needs, and defining the goals and objectives of the sprint.
Goal Setting
We will begin by defining the long-term goal. What does success look like? And what could be the reason for failing?
Expert Interviews
Bring in experts from within and outside the team to share insights about the business, the audience, and the problem space.
Map Making
Create a map of the challenge by defining the user journey map, outlining how a customer interacts with the product or service, identifying key actors, actions, and emotions.
How Might We
Transform problems and challenges into opportunities by asking "HMW" questions.
Diverge
Participants individually generate a wide range of ideas and solutions through sketching. This phase encourages divergent thinking and encourages participants to explore different approaches.
Individual Ideation
In this activity, each team member independently generates ideas (e.g., Crazy Eights).
Solution Sketching
This is when we will refine the initial ideas, making them more thoughtful, to present a clear solution in a step-by-step format.
Silent Review
Team members review all sketches silently, making notes of what they find interesting or important.
Decide
The team then reviews and shares their sketches, discussing the merits and potential of each idea. Through discussions, debates, and voting, they collectively decide on the most promising solution to pursue.
Heat Map
Create a heat map by having team members place dot stickers on parts of sketches they like
Straw Poll
Each team member votes on their favorite ideas with a larger dot sticker
Storyboarding
Create a storyboard for the prototype, outlining the flow and key components
Prototype
In this phase, a rapid but realistic prototype of the chosen solution is created. The prototype can be a digital mockup, a storyboard, or even a physical model, depending on the nature of the problem.
Divide and Conquer
We will divide the team assigning roles like Maker, Stitcher, Writer, Asset Collector, and Interviewer
Prototype Tools
Use tools like Figma or Sketch for digital prototypes, or paper and markers for physical ones
Fake It
Focus on the facade of the product. It doesn’t need to be functional; it just needs to be convincing for the test
Simplify
Only include what’s necessary for the user test. Avoid unnecessary complexity
Test and Validate
The final phase involves testing the prototype with targeted users or stakeholders. Through interviews or usability tests, the team gathers feedback and insights to validate the solution and identify areas for improvement.
User Interviews
Recruit users that match your target audience
Conducting Interviews
Facilitate interviews, encouraging users to think aloud
Observation and Note-Taking
Team members watch the interviews (live or recorded) and take detailed notes
Debrief and Learnings
After all interviews, debrief as a team. Discuss patterns, insights, and whether the prototype met its goals
